Project Overview
Carmel College required a large-span, high-strength covered walkway to improve external circulation between buildings and provide a sheltered space for students and staff. The solution needed to be durable, visually open, and capable of withstanding heavy daily use in a busy educational environment.
Luxica was appointed to design, supply, and install a bespoke steel arched canopy, incorporating full-height glazing to create a bright, protected, and functional outdoor space.
Design & Specification
Luxica delivered a bespoke steel canopy system, engineered to meet the structural demands of a long-span public-sector installation.

- Overall size: 22 metres long x 7 metres projection
- High-strength fibreglass roof panels, selected for added rigidity and long-term durability
- 22 metre continuous run of sliding glass panels to the front elevation
- Steel structure finished in a durable, protective coating suitable for external use
- Designed for high footfall and long-term performance in an education setting
- Installed onto existing hardstanding with precise alignment and fixing
The arched steel structure allows the canopy to span the full length without visual bulk, while the fibreglass roof provides excellent strength and light transmission.

Challenges & Solutions
The primary challenge was delivering a 22m long steel structure within a live college environment while maintaining safety and minimising disruption. Luxica carefully planned logistics, lifting operations, and installation sequencing to ensure works were completed efficiently and safely.
The 22m run of sliding glass panels required accurate tolerances to ensure smooth operation across the entire elevation. Luxica’s experienced installation team ensured precise tracking alignment and consistent performance along the full length of the canopy.
Completion Results
The finished installation has significantly enhanced the outdoor facilities at Carmel College. The steel canopy provides a robust, weather-protected circulation space while maintaining a light, open appearance through the use of glazing.
The sliding glass panels allow flexibility throughout the year, enabling the area to remain open in fair conditions and fully enclosed when required.
